Boris Points The Way

1. A Tree In Your Ear
Stephen Caplan, oboe and English horn

This adventurous CD consists of a number of twentieth century oboe works. It's very cool, and much more fun than a lot of other 20th century stuff out there. Steve Caplan is a wonderful player, and he has a real flare with jazz, with electronics, and this is what makes this CD so nice to listen to. He's got a beautiful sound, but it doesn't stop there--he has an adventurous sou1. He's just like how I would want to be if I could only play the oboe! The first cut, Phillip Bimstein's Half Moon at Checkerboard Mesa is my all-time music favorite. It is scored for oboe and frogs, crickets, and coyotes. When I first heard all those animals, I went right into my Whirling Dervish act. What a great piece! It's my favorite piece of music in the whole world. Cats love it, too. When they hear all those crickets, they start fondling and pawing the speakers, since they think the crickets are in there. And then there's my ego-- when Stephen Caplan walked on stage to play this piece at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California, he made a special surprise announcement to the audience dedicating that performance to me. Isn't that the nicest thing anyone ever did for a dog? Five stars all the way around and then some!

Feedback For Boris:

Dear Boris,

Thank you very much for your review of my piece. I am so glad you like it and that it makes you want to dance. I checked out your picture and you have good ears and a dancer's body. You write well, and should consider being a freelancer for a dog magazine, or a columnist from the field for a people magazine. I forwarded your response to a few friends, many of whom have written me back with delightful responses. Could a Boris music review for pet magazines be far behind? You are a hit! See the doggie trail you have started!

2. The Animal Blessing
His Holiness Orgyen Kusum Lingpa

This cassette tape was recorded live in New York's Central Park by a great living master of Tibetan Buddhism. You'll hear many dogs from the Upper East Side who were in the audience. Any animal that hears this tape is supposed to be reborn as a person in their next life, so I decided to cover my bases and I suggest you do, too.
